Goofy sideckick robot of the original Mazinger Z? If you don't know, shame on you.</p> <p>So this iteration of Boss Borot is brought to you by Evolution Toy, purveyors of fine magnemo toys. As a rule, they take what would normal solid robot designs and turn them into shaky messes. I'd like to tell you this is different, but it's not. At least it's kind of goofy.</p> <p>The box is your typical thin Evolution toy packaging. Thin box, thin plastic tray.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/882414-3/P8181396.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181396.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/882415-3/P8181397.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181397.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/882416-3/P8181435.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181435.jpg" /></p> <p>The selling point of this set is the accessories, but first lets get into the core toy itself.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/882417-3/P8181436.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181436.jpg" /></p> <p>Boss is about 6 inches tall, and is made of plastic with metal balls and magnets connecting all the joints. The toy is lightweight and jiggly.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/882418-3/P8181437.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181437.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/882419-3/P8181438.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181438.jpg" /></p> <p>The back has a bunch of holes but Evolution included little plugs to fit in.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/882420-3/P8181439.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181439.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/882443-3/P8181462.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181462.jpg" /></p> <p>One of the big challenges of making a Boss Borot toy is how to handle the arms. In the cartoon they are just flexible tubes with no distinct joints. Bandai tried a multi-segmented approach with their <a href="http://www.faindo.com/toy_review/2002/boss_borot">Soul of Chogokin release</a>, and this one attempts to use their magnemo joint system. Why nobody can come up with a bendy arm system for this that looks like the anime is beyond me.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/882421-3/P8181440.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181440.jpg" /></p> <p>The arm connects to the body at the detented shoulder joint, which also has a hinge, and a rotating bicep. This ends on a metal ball with a joint, and then the next piece ends with the same, then finally, the forearm. None of these likes to stay in any one pose, and they move constantly. They are barely strong enough to hold more dynamic poses. I really don't like them at all.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/882422-3/P8181441.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181441.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/882423-3/P8181442.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181442.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/882424-3/P8181443.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181443.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/882425-3/P8181444.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181444.jpg" /></p> <p>The silver fists can be swapped out for open hands.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/882426-3/P8181445.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181445.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/882428-3/P8181447.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181447.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/882429-3/P8181448.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181448.jpg" /></p> <p>There's a small door in the stomach that opens to reveal a cannon.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/882427-3/P8181446.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181446.jpg" /></p> <p>There's a lot of parts for the core body. These parts equip Boss for a day out at the beach!</p> <p>The feet have flippers that fit tightly over.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/882431-3/P8181450.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181450.jpg" /></p> <p>Now's a good time to showcase the rubber pads on the bottom of the feet.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/882444-3/P8181463.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181463.jpg" /></p> <p>The beach gear comes with a few options and can be configured in various ways. Here you see the head propellor has been added, along with swim trunks and flippers.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/882432-3/P8181451.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181451.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/882433-3/P8181452.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181452.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/882436-3/P8181455.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181455.jpg" /></p> <p>You need to separate the body to slide over the trunks. Also, there are pull out joints that enable a greater range of motion in the legs.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/882437-3/P8181456.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181456.jpg" /></p> <p>Also included is a set of "inflated" trunks that attach in the same fashion. Boss is shown here with those and the scuba mask.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/882438-3/P8181457.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181457.jpg" /><br /> <img src="/gallery2/d/882439-3/P8181458.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181458.jpg" /><br /> <img src="/gallery2/d/882440-3/P8181459.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181459.jpg" /><br /> <img src="/gallery2/d/882441-3/P8181460.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181460.jpg" /></p> <p>Finally, a white headband is included, but it barely fits around the head.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/882442-3/P8181461.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181461.jpg" /></p> <p>You may have noticed a few different heads for Boss. Three heads are included and they attach via magnet. Be careful with them, as the magnet is attached to a peg with weak glue. Mine fell apart, then the peg fell out. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/882435-3/P8181454.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=16c24df8b24115aa381498548880fd43" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P8181454.jpg" /></p> <p>The only way to get the peg back in is to separate the head, and you can't do that without breaking a glue seal. So if you are keeping count, it's the third Evolution toy in a row with QC issues. At this price point, it's just not worth it. Unless they get their shit together i'm done with Evolution toy.</p> <p><br class="giImageBlock-clear-both" /></p></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-scale"> <h3 class="field-label">Scale</h3> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item"></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-chardesign"> <h3 class="field-label">Char. It was published through 11 volumes and ended in 2015.</p> <p>While a re-design for Grendizer was highly anticipated, this one went mostly under the radar, perhaps due to only having a short run manga. It's a classy, refined take on one of the most iconic super robots, and it deserves it's place next to Mazinkaizer and Shin Getter.</p> <p>As for toys, the first company to step up was Evolution toy, followed by a soft vinyl from Medicom. Bandai so far has ignored the design. And even with Evolution Toy, they decided to do the release as a GK Limited release.</p> <p>GK stands for Garage Kit. These are usually resin or vinyl kits that the purchaser has to put together. Evolution toy has released several small-run Garage kits at events and festivals, but those are un-painted and un-assembled. The GK Limited line takes that Garage Kit style and paints and assembles them. So the toy is still largely resin, it's a much smaller production run than a regular injection molded release. Just holding the toy you can tell it's different from other Evolution Toy Dynamite Action releases.</p> <p>The box is a thicker cardboard than the usual release, and the interior styrofoam not as dense or well sculpted. This toy did not have the packaging budget of the regular releases. Inside there are crude pockets made for the parts and figure.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/867982-3/PC070615.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=41c9fe42976cf24500d6f1bec0a4ede6" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="PC070615.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/867983-3/PC070616.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=41c9fe42976cf24500d6f1bec0a4ede6" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="PC070616.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/867984-3/PC070617.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=41c9fe42976cf24500d6f1bec0a4ede6" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="PC070617.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/867985-3/PC070618.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=41c9fe42976cf24500d6f1bec0a4ede6" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="PC070618.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/867986-3/PC110619.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=41c9fe42976cf24500d6f1bec0a4ede6" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="PC110619.jpg" /></p> <p>The Grendizer figure itself comes assembled in the package aside from the horns. The fit of the horns is very loose, so be prepared for them to fall out often.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/867987-3/PC110620.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=41c9fe42976cf24500d6f1bec0a4ede6" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="PC110620.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/867988-3/PC110621.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=41c9fe42976cf24500d6f1bec0a4ede6" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="PC110621.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/867989-3/PC110622.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=41c9fe42976cf24500d6f1bec0a4ede6" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="PC110622.jpg" /></p> <p>Grendizer looks good. The paint is nice, the sculpt is a bit doughy, and the magnets hold well. The limbs are a bit heavier because they are made out of solid resin instead of hollow injection molded plastic. This definitely seems hand-sculpted rather than something done with computer design.</p> <p>The articulation is also not as refined as it is with the regular release. Grendizer Giga does not have the detented shoulder joints that the regular Dynamite Action releases do, nor does it have any kind of magnetic abdomen or waist joint. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/867991-3/PC110624.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=41c9fe42976cf24500d6f1bec0a4ede6" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="PC110624.jpg" /><br /> <img src="/gallery2/d/867995-3/PC110629.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=41c9fe42976cf24500d6f1bec0a4ede6" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="PC110629.jpg" /></p> <p>Here's the parts breakdown of the figure itself. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/867992-3/PC110625.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=41c9fe42976cf24500d6f1bec0a4ede6" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="PC110625.jpg" /></p> <p>It's pretty basic. And since Nexx Gilbert's blue-striped aircraft was the only machine from the OVA series to get any general merchandise (in the form of a <a href="http://www.faindo.com/toy_review/1992/vf2ss_valkyrie_ii_super_armed_pack">plastic model kit from Bandai</a>), it is arguably the most recognizable Valkyrie from Macross II. However, its release was preceded by a Faerie Squadron version that would be our first look at how Evolution Toy realized the Valkyrie's iconic Super Armed Pack (SAP). In addition, a standalone release of the SAP was made available in limited quantities so those who bought the bare-bones Silvie variant could complete their figure. </p> <p><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/DveNO7DQYPM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></p> <p>Please check out my video review.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863315-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+35.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 35" /></p> <p>For the purposes of this review, I will focus on the changes made with the Nexx variant, so please check out <a href="http://www.faindo.com/toy_review/2016/vf2ss_valkyrie_ii_silvie_gena">my review of Silvie's VF-2SSM/a&gt; if you want a complete look at the base Valkyrie figure itself. First and foremost, Mr. 2P Color's machine is made from a slightly rougher-feeling plastic with a matte finish, rather than the smooth and shiny material used for Ms. 1P Color. As a result, Nexx's Valkyrie looks a bit more pleasing to the eye and feels just a tiny bit less cheap. Also, some of the thinner areas of the toy, which suffered from being slightly transparent on the Silvie version, have become more opaque with the material change. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863298-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+34.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 34" /></p> <p>As this is Nexx Gilbert's Valkyrie, you do get a tiny 1:60 pilot figure of Silvie's plot-irrelevant sorta-boyfriend to sit in the cockpit. Interestingly, this is the first of these Valkyrie II toys to include a male pilot, as the Faerie Squadron consists of Silvie's all-girl lackeys. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863316-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+36.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 36" /></p> <p>Evolution Toy also applied several tweaks to the base figure, such as redesigned locking tabs for the tailfins so that they actually, you know, <i>lock in place</i> for fighter mode. Unfortunately, my copy of the figure had some weird assembly woes, as both fins would twist their tiny screws out of the base of the swivel joint when moved. In my video review, I attributed this to the oddly thick clear plastic washers stuck in-between the diecast metal assembly and the fin itself, and I found out afterwards that removing the washers entirely appears to have fixed that problem. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863318-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+38.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 38" /></p> <p>Flipping over to the toy's underside reveals some significant revisions to the transformation. First off, the plastic mounts for the diecast swing bars have also been modified, so the whole leg assembly has two separate positions for the different modes. In theory, pulling the diecast bar back better aligns the engine/leg for fighter mode, while leaving it forward allows the legs to plug in where they need to for Gerwalk and Battroid mode. It's a sound idea, but the rubbery plastic of the gray mounting bars tends to get chewed up when you move the joint. In addition, neither position feels especially solid, so the bar tends to travel in between them while you're trying to transform the figure. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863319-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+39.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 39" /></p> <p>Moving on to an improvement that actually kind of works, Evolution Toy added an extra flip-out tab to help keep the engines in place for fighter mode. While this does help out a fair bit, getting the leg all-the-way plugged-in can still be a messy affair, as you have to deal with getting all three tabs lined up while two of them (the existing flip-out tab on the arm and the new one) are freely movable. Still, I'll take some extra frustration over the legs just falling out-of-place like they do on Silvie's Valkyrie. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863320-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+40.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 40" /></p> <p>Lastly, the shoulder assemblies have gained their own L-shaped clip that lets them lock in place to the fighter mode's underside. This ends up being a really big help with the arm's SAP equipment attached. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863293-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+29.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 29" /></p> <p>The Super-Armed Pack set consists of a familiar spread of VF-1 style accessories. Nexx's Valkyrie in particular includes a modified right leg pack for his custom rail gun pod, and two "Squire" attack drones. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863317-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+37.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 37" /></p> <p>Also included with this release is a simple flight stand. You get two separate armatures for the displaying the VF-2SS with or without the SAP. I actually like this arrangement a lot better than Bandai's Valkyrie stands, as this one is so much more compact and takes up less shelf space. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863321-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+41.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 41" /></p> <p>The Squire drones have their own armatures so they can be positioned flying in formation with the Valkyrie. They are mounted on small ball-joints and can be turned to a few different angles. However, things get a little crowded once the SAP-laden Valkyrie takes to the stand. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863295-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+31.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 31" /></p> <p>As soon as you start to handle the SAP parts, it becomes painfully obvious just how cheap these things both look and feel. While the details are alright, the plastic used has a bunch of flash around major parts, and a lot unsightly sharp edges. This is seriously just a step away from the kind of plastic you'd find on a dollar store toy. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863297-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+33.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 33" /></p> <p>Excess glue is present in nearly every nook and cranny, including this joint for the armored wing assembly.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863296-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+32.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 32" /></p> <p>There's a ton of production scars too, even in places that will be clearly visible like the underside of the rail gun. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863294-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+30.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 30" /></p> <p>My biggest concern is just how <i>thin</i> the plastic is in some places. The connections between the backpack engines and the central block already have stress marks from being attached and removed from the Valkyrie just a few times. Do your best to handle this area with kid gloves, lest the damn thing break apart.</p> <p>One thing on the backpack that isn't going to break is the extra long antenna, as it is made from a strong rubbery plastic that happily bends out of the way while handling the toy. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863233-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+18.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 18" /></p> <p>To Evolution Toy's credit, their Valkyrie II toy does look pretty impressive at a glance, and the packs stay attached for the most part. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863255-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+28.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 28" /></p> <p>However, the look, feel, and finish of the VF-2SS's equipment is a far cry from the rock-solid Super/Strike parts Yamato released for their VF-1 Valkyries. Evolution Toy's effort feels like a huge step back from what Yamato was doing several years prior. Just like the main figure itself, everything feels primitive and outdated. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863234-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+19.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 19" /></p> <p>While the base toy was criticized for being too chunky in fighter mode, the addition of the SAP masks some of its aesthetic failings. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863235-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+20.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 20" /></p> <p>As I mentioned before, the right leg pack can carry Nexx's custom heavy rail gun pod. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863236-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+21.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 21" /></p> <p>The thing is, though, the gun isn't held in by anything other than friction, which means it can be bumped off quite easily. While a dab of superglue or floor polish can fix this problem in a pinch, I'm kind of baffled Evolution Toy couldn't come up with something more robust than what Bandai did with their now more than 20-year-old model kit. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863322-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+42.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 42" /></p> <p>And despite being the first release, Silvie's VF-2SS can mount the SAP just as well as Nexx's Valkyrie. However, since her Valkyrie lacks the extra flip-out locking tab for its legs, the fighter mode tends to come apart if you pick it up off its landing gear. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863250-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+23.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 23" /></p> <p>Moving on, the flight stand can still happily display the fully equipped Valkyrie II. Just don't jostle the whole setup around too much or you might jar one of the legs loose. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863251-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+24.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 24" /></p> <p>And while I managed to get everything mostly lined up for these photos, it should be noted that attaching the arm packs actually covers up the flip-out tabs that secure the forearms to the legs in fighter mode, so the figure's stability is somewhat compromised. You also cannot open up the forearm panels to allow the fists to swing out, so please plan ahead before changing the Super-Armed Valkyrie between modes. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863254-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+27.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 27" /></p> <p>As I mentioned before, the display stand gets pretty crowded when both the Valkyrie II and its Squire drones are plugged into the stand's base. By default, the drones hug so close to the aircraft you'd almost think Evolution Toy intends for them to help hold the VF-2SS aloft. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863252-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+25.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 25" /></p> <p>That said, it is possible to angle the Squires away from the Valkyrie by pulling their own armatures slightly out from the slots they're tabbed into. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863253-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+26.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 26" /></p> <p>Now the drones look like they're flying in formation with the Valkyrie, similar to what was seen during their brief appearance in the OVA. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863219-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+16.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 16" /></p> <p>As you would expect, the fully equipped toy becomes much more top heavy in Gerwalk mode. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863214-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+11.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 11" /></p> <p>The Valkyrie II's tiny feet and decidedly limited joints mean there are very few poses you can achieve with the figure in this configuration. And sadly, you cannot use the display stand in this mode, as both armatures are too short to allow enough clearance for the toy's legs. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863232-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+17.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 17" /></p> <p>At the very least, you can recreate the look of the Valkyrie II's game sprites from the Macross II: Lovers Again arcade game. I can just hear the power-up voice shouting, "<i>GA-WAHK! MI-SAIRU! HORMING!</i>"</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863218-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+15.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 15" /></p> <p>Gerwalk mode also lets you show off all the SAP's various built-in gimmicks, like a set of five opening missile launcher on either arm pack. Sadly, the doors are pretty flimsy and sometimes don't close properly. Underneath each panel is a trio of black voids that look less like a source of rocket-powered death and more like the face of Danboard's weird cousin. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863215-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+12.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 12" /></p> <p>The ends of each arm pack can open up to store the normal type rail gun pod included with the other VF-2SS figures. Now, as far as I know, Nexx's Valkyrie does not come with the accessory (and it was flat out missing from the tray when I opened my figure) so I am borrowing this gun from Silvie's. It's a pretty snug fit for the gun pod, and I found that the only way for me to remove it was to pry the whole arm pack off again... </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863216-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+13.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 13" /></p> <p>At the end of each armored wing is a rotating missile pod with opening launcher doors. Upon opening up the launchers you are greeted with some truly gnarly paint work, with a nasty seam line going right through the molded on missiles. Again, this looks far too much like a cheap toy for what is supposed to be an expensive high-end figure. Also, the missile pods will pop off when you rotate them, which is truly the mark of "quality."</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863217-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+14.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 14" /></p> <p>A similar missile pod is mounted right in the middle of the Valkyrie II's chunky backpack. This pod can rotate a full 360 degrees (without falling off) and can even slide back and forth depending on the mode the figure is in. Like the wing pods, this upper launcher has poorly painted missiles molded into the plastic across a gappy seam. At the very least you might get a chuckle out of the opened pod looking a bit like a surprised Johnny 5 from <i>Short Circuit.</i></p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863182-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+3.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 3" /></p> <p>When you finally reach Battroid mode, the SAP-laden VF-2SS does manged to stand up perfectly fine.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863181-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+2.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 2" /></p> <p>It can even sorta pose a bit if you're patient. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863200-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+9.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="445" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 9" /></p> <p>The upside to the cheap plastic used on the SAP set is that it actually doesn't add that much more weight to the figure. Also, the toy's limited leg articulation ends up being an asset when carrying this huge backpack. You're not going to see the legs suddenly splay out so far as to make the Valkyrie tumble because on this toy, they cannot physically move that far! </p> <p>Yay...? </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863199-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+8.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 8" /></p> <p>And as expected, the big rail gun assembly can flip up and over the Valkyrie's head like the beefed up strike pack it is. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863197-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+6.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 6" /></p> <p>There's even the little flip-down blast shield for covering the face. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863198-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+7.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 7" /></p> <p>Although there isn't really a set way to rest the assembly over the Valkyrie II's head, which again puts this toy on the same level as the old Bandai kit. While it is true there is no art work depicted just how this part of the backpack interacts with the robot's noggin, I wished Evolution Toy had tried to come up with something. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/863180-3/VF2SS+SAP+Nexx+Gilbert+1.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=919c9b6a15cff9748ee645024d4eaf13" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="VF2SS SAP Nexx Gilbert 1" /></p> <p>Overall, for every step forward Evolution Toy tried to make with their minor tweaks and improvements to their VF-2SS figure, the Super-Armed Pack manages to nullify their efforts by being so frustratingly sub-par. Many consider the SAP to be essential equipment for the Valkyrie II, so I can understand when fans want to shell out for a full set like this one here. The fully-loaded VF-2SS is very much the design's iconic look, as it rarely appeared with the SAP in the OVA or promotional artwork. However, for as much as Evolution Toy is charging for this whole set (roughly $300 USD for the set or just $60 USD for the packs), what you are getting is an outdated Valkyrie toy with some poor quality accessories. I can't recommend this figure, even to diehard Macross II fans. Perhaps if you see one for sale at a heavy (and I mean <i>heavy</i>) discount, then it makes for an alright display piece. That said, the shelf presence of a 1:60 scale VF-2SS toy with its humongous weaponry isn't enough to excuse paying full price for the combination of an outdated Valkyrie figure with poor quality accessories. <br class="giImageBlock-clear-both" /></p></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-scale"> <h3 class="field-label">Scale</h3> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item">1:60</div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-chardesign"> <h3 class="field-label">Char. What we DO know is the toy's appearance in the Godaikin toy line. Laserion was always sort of an odd duck in the Godaikin line. It was this weird chrome and clear robot that collapsed into a squished version of the same robot. For most kids, it probably was the most disappointing of the Godaikins, but I was always fascinated by the design. You can check out the anime on YouTube, but it's not that great. The toy however is one of my favorite DX chogokin toys, namely just because of how odd it is.</p> <p>There never was a modern version of Laserion until now. It got passed over in the SOC line. Aoshima didn't care about it. Nor did Yamato, Takara, CM's or a host of others. Nope it wasn't until this year that Evolution Toy added it to their Dynamite Action line of toys. My first reaction was "Yay! New Laserion!" then I was all like "oh, its Evolution Toy, now I don't know what to think.".</p> <p>We've reviewed a bunch of these magnemo Dynamite Action toys, and i've come to decide that I have a love / hate relationship with them. I love the fact that they are doing obscure characters in the line, but I feel that the magnet joint gimmick is possibly wearing a bit thin. They just seem to lack that toy like stability. Yes, the magnets are firm, but the lack of detented clicky joints makes me wish it were a more proper action figure. I still like it because I like the character, but it has issues.</p> <p>So lets get into it...</p> <p>The box is pretty standard for Evolution Toy. Thin cardboard, plastic trays. Parts are spread out over two trays. There are a lot of parts in this set.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/849421-3/P4030540.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030540.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/849423-3/P4030541.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030541.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/849425-3/P4030542.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030542.jpg" /><br /> <img src="/gallery2/d/849428-3/P4030543.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030543.jpg" /></p> <p>Laserion's core body is entirely shiny chrome and has a very henshin-cyborg type vibe. All the parts are exquisitely plated, with few paint details. The natural chrome of the metal connection balls just sort of vanish into the design. The character is never seen this way in the anime, this is just the core of the robot without it's initial armor. The Godaikin toy had some clear green inserts inside instead of chrome, and I kind of miss that look.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/849430-3/P4030544.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030544.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/849432-3/P4030545.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030545.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/849434-3/P4030546.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030546.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/849436-3/P4030547.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030547.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/849439-3/P4030548.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030548.jpg" /></p> <p>Adding the armor pieces requires you to disassemble the toy as you put each piece on. Starting with the foot, I noticed the first problem with this toy. The toy is missing opening panels on the bottom of the feet. I so happened to have two of these (don't ask) and the other has the panels, so I am going to say it was an omission on my sample and not across the line. Neither Godaikin releases came with this extra set of armor - you could only get it with the Japanese box set. This armor goes over the existing armor, to bulk up the original armor. He's like a futuristic football armor superhero. The great thing is that the additional armor does not restrict movement any more than the basic coating. The only issue with the armor is the chest piece has a small part with a hinge that can pop off when handling it.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/849491-3/P4030577.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030577.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/849493-3/P4030578.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030578.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/849495-3/P4030579.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030579.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/849497-3/P4030580.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030580.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/849514-3/P4030581.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030581.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/849515-3/P4030582.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030582.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/849516-3/P4030583.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030583.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/849517-3/P4030584.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030584.jpg" /></p> <p>Apparently, in the show, Laserion can re-form into a tank or fighter mode. I don't think it happens often, but it happens. As such, Evolution Toy takes advantage of the modular nature of the magnemo joint system to make these modes, with the addition of several connector parts. To be honest, these two modes are un-necessary and rather poorly done.</p> <p>Laser Fighter is the better of the two modes. It's rickety and imprecise, and relies too heavily on random connector parts.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/849519-3/P4030586.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030586.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/849520-3/P4030587.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030587.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/849521-3/P4030588.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030588.jpg" /></p> <p>I'd say the fighter is 70% Laserion parts, and 30% connector crap.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/849522-3/P4030589.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030589.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/849523-3/P4030591.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030591.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/849570-3/P4030592.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030592.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/849572-3/P4030593.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030593.jpg" /></p> <p>As weak as Laser Fighter is, Laser Tank just sucks. It's an abomination. Nothing fits, nothing stays together. I mean, what the hell is this?</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/849575-3/P4030594.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030594.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/849576-3/P4030595.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030595.jpg" /></p> <p>The instructions tell you to turn the leg parts on the front a certain way, but that makes the connections look skewed. Rotating them sideways looks and works better, for what its worth.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/849579-3/P4030596.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030596.jpg" /><img src="/gallery2/d/849581-3/P4030597.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030597.jpg" /></p> <p>And then there's this part. See the bottom? those two holes? Looks like there's supposed to be a panel there, but there isn't. It's not missing, they just decided not to include it in production. Well because there's no door to lock in the head ship, it just falls out when you move it.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/849587-3/P4030600.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030600.jpg" /></p> <p>F*@k this mode.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/849586-3/P4030599.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=99bb67a2ac4944565f3bf66c3d55dde7" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="P4030599.jpg" /></p> <p>So lets see where that leaves us. I love that we have a modern, fully poseable Laserion toy. If left alone on a shelf, it will look awesome. But let's be honest, there are issues. Missing pieces, parts that fall off, and crappy alternate modes. All of this can be yours for 30,000 yen (273.00 USD) That's way too much for this toy even IF it was well engineered. I can't recommend it. If you can find it for a hundred bucks on clearance, go for it, if you want a nice expression of the character on your shelf. But for that money, you can buy a mint vintage version, which is a much better toy in every way.<br /> <br class="giImageBlock-clear-both" /></p></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-scale"> <h3 class="field-label">Scale</h3> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item"></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-chardesign"> <h3 class="field-label">Char. After over two decades of waiting, Valkyrie II fans had their prayers answered with a bit of a curve-ball. A proper 1/60 scale VF-2SS comes to us, not from Arcadia or Bandai, but from the relative newcomers: Evolution Toy.</p> <p>Now, any toy of the Valkyrie II is going to carry a super baggage pack with it. On top of the weight of expectations, this is Evolution Toy's first stab at a Macross figure, a fully transformable toy, and is the first toy of the VF-2SS <i>ever.</i> If you think this is a recipe for disappointment, you'd be right on the mark. </p> <p><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/DiUsoqjPjL4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></p> <p>Please check out my video review.</p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845773-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+1.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 1" /></p> <p>Like most Macross toys, the VF-2SS comes packaged in fighter mode, which is unfortunate since that is easily the figure's weakest form. Kazumi Fujita and Koichi Ohata's more futuristic take on the classic VF-1 is given a rather workmanlike rendition by Evolution Toy. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845774-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+2.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 2" /></p> <p>While I am admittedly not a huge fan of the base design, many Valkyrie II enthusiasts have been gritting their teeth at what I must agree is a "thick" take on this VF. The toy measures about 10.5 inches from nose to engines. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845775-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+3.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 3" /></p> <p>Much of the thickness stems from Evolution Toy's rather outdated ways of addressing the design quirks of the VF-2SS. For instance, the Valkyrie's wings have a hinge near the root so they can angle upwards. On this figure, those hinges are realized with big square blocks that are far thicker than the wings themselves. Because of this, Evolution Toy added an extra hinge to the backpack so it can span the extra thickness in a clunky and inaccurate manner. All of these issues result in a fighter mode that looks far too bulky and gappy, especially from the rear. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845793-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+9.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 9" /></p> <p>Detailing-wise, the toy is on par with a decent late 90s/early 2000s collector's toy. All the important panel lines and surface bits are represented, but without the fidelity and precision expected of a toy from 2016. For example, the plane's numerous verniers are rendered as molded circles highlighted by sparkly silver paint, which makes them look weirdly retro. Additionally, the glossy lightweight plastic used in this toy's construction makes it look and feel like a low-rent High Complete Model imitator. Extra markings are provided by the <a href="http://www.faindo.com/gallery/v/Toys/EvolutionToy/vf2sssilvie/vf-2ss+stickers.jpg.html">included sticker sheet,</a> which looks suspiciously like the kind from Bandai's old 1/100 plastic kit. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845795-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+11.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 11" /></p> <p>Others have compared the toy to the likes of CM's Corporation's Brave Gokin Legioss toys, but I honestly feel like this is just a step below that. The VF-2SS does use a similar trick of rubber covers for unsightly joints, but only on the tiny metal assembly for the tail fins. If you see these come and go in my photos, it is because they don't really stay on and end up being basically useless.</p> <p>Also, I cannot for the life of Mash get the tail fins to properly tab into the sub-engines in a way that doesn't feel like I'm stressing the plastic. Honestly, I'm not even sure if my toy has its fins attached on the right side because the bases of the fins don't seem to conform to the contours of the engine block. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/846304-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+40.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 40" /></p> <p>Construction-wise, the Valkyrie II is weirdly retro. Even the landing wheels are simple plastic discs glued to the ends of a metal rod. No separate rubber tires here. In their defense, the VF-2SS lacks any landing gear in its original line art, so Evolution Toy had to just make up something for their figure. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845792-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+8.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 8" /></p> <p>Also, one of the main wheels on my toy popped off and got lost in the couch, so I can't even properly display it in fighter mode with gear down now. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845811-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+15.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 15" /></p> <p>With its landing gear up, the VF-2SS looks passable from below. Marring the clean profile of the figure's base design is a pair of highly visible unpainted diecast struts that move the legs around for transformation. The line art depicts the VF-2SS with <a href="http://www.faindo.com/files/vf-2ss-transformation2.gif"> a tiny hinged assembly</a> for holding the entire leg, which Evolution Toy did not even try to imitate with their low-tech engineering. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/846307-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+41.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 41" /></p> <p>Adding to the messiness is the set of tiny tabs that are ill-equipped to keep the Valkyrie's legs locked in place. Unlike Kawamori's VF designs, the VF-2SS doesn't really arrange its parts in a way where one would just naturally align with another, so it's on the toy makers to keep each mode nice and solid. Sadly, one of the legs on my toy constantly comes loose when handling it (you see this happen a lot in my video review). I am not kidding when I say I have classic Gobot jets that stay together more tightly in jet mode than this VF-2SS. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845777-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+5.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 5" /></p> <p>But enough about the flaws, let's focus on some good things about the VF-2SS. To Evolution Toy's credit, their toy is at the very least trying to match the Macross toys from Bandai and Arcadia with the Valkyrie II's gimmicks. The toy does have an opening canopy with a pretty good looking cockpit on the inside. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845790-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+6.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 6" /></p> <p>The Silvie Gena pilot figure looks pretty good too. In fact, initial impressions from Japanese twitter users often said this accessory was easily the best part of the toy. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845791-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+7.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 7" /></p> <p>And to my surprise, Evolution Toy was able to put a tiny tampo printed display on the cockpit's main console. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845794-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+10.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 10" /></p> <p>Evolution Toy even added the ability to mount the VF-2SS's gun pod underneath the plane's belly. A little slot in the backpack's hinged flap lets the weapon plug in. Or at least it does in theory, as the connection is far too loose on my toy.<br /> <img src="/gallery2/d/845808-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+12.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 12" /></p> <p>The toy does not come with a stand or any kind of adapter, but works okay with a FlightPose stand provided the tabs are doing their job. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845810-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+14.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 14" /></p> <p>From certain angles, the unsightly diecast swing bars will get lost in the shadows of the plane's underside. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845809-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+13.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 13" /></p> <p>However, there is no denying that the VF-2SS's characteristic front body intakes were shrunk to the point of barely existing just to shoehorn in those swing bars. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845813-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+17.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 17" /></p> <p>Like with many VF-1 derivatives, the meat and potatoes of the VF-2SS's conversion lies in moving its legs around. The aforementioned diecast armatures hinge and rotate on a small polycap-type joint, which are themselves attached to an L-shaped gray plastic piece. These bits do not appear to move, but often get flexed a bit as you move the diecast bars around. While this is a bit worrying, I think the gray parts are made from sturdy POM plastic. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845826-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+18.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 18" /></p> <p>The arms hinge out to the side where they attach to the same tabs that can sometimes fail to keep the legs in place. A plastic tab joins the diecast bars for both Gerwalk and Battroid mode. Also note the tiny flip out tabs near the middle of the main body. These are where the upper legs/intakes attach for Gerwalk mode, but also need to be left out to allow the main body's hinges to fold for Battroid mode. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845827-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+19.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 19" /></p> <p>Another praiseworthy part of this toy is how the hands are stored inside the forearms. Evolution Toy recognized the existing panel lines of the VF-2SS design and made the forearm open to the side so as not to affect their curvy profile. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845828-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+20.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 20" /></p> <p>Gerwalk mode is where the Valkyrie II starts to get closer to its forebear in terms of layout, and the toy benefits from this. Its legs are more smartly placed and get locked into a stronger set of tabs. The arms are 50/50 on my figure, as one shoulder assembly gets slowly squeezed off its mounting tab in the the same way the leg does in fighter mode. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845829-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+21.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 21" /></p> <p>Weirdly enough, the toy does not have a true forward and back joint in its ankles. Rather, each "toe" of the Valkyrie's feet moves independently, with a ratcheting joint that lets them rest at the appropriate angle for each mode. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845830-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+22.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 22" /></p> <p>And while the toy's legs do have mid-knee swivels, their placement deep within the joint makes it difficult to get the Valkyrie II into a proper A-stance. Ideally, most of the work for this pose should be happening where the intakes meet the main body of the Gerwalk, but the locking tabs impede angling the legs outward in such a manner. You could leave the legs unlocked completely, but that makes the figure unstable. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845831-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+23.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 23" /></p> <p>The figure's hands are chunky, but have all the same functions as the poseable mitts from other Macross toys. You get a hinged block of three fingers with an independently movable trigger finger and thumb. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845856-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+24.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 24" /></p> <p>Tabs in the palms of the Valkyrie's hands end up doing most of the work in keeping a grip on the toy's gun pod. Unfortunately, this is one of those toys where the blocky fingers were not designed with the gun's smooth, rounded handle in mind, so closing them tightly will just knock the weapon out of the VF-2SS's hand. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845857-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+25.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 25" /></p> <p>When moving along to Battroid mode, pay attention to these small rotating tabs. In fighter mode these lock the backpack in place, but must be reoriented to help keep the torso together. They end up plugging into tiny slots near the edges of the chest plate and have to coaxed in as both halves come together. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845858-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+26.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 26" /></p> <p>Battroid mode is easily the toy's most stable form as multiple clips, pegs, and tabs keep everything in place. It also demonstrates how the VF-2SS is a very Battroid-centric design, as the limbs that could scarcely tuck away in fighter mode are now free to rest comfortably along the design's slender torso. The toy makes for a roughly 10.5 inch tall robot figure. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845859-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+27.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 27" /></p> <p>The Valkyrie II certainly has a lot of presence in Battroid mode and Evolution Toy's rendition makes for a good display piece. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845861-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+29.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 29" /></p> <p>Complementing the sleek S-type head design is clear plastic parts for both its visor and head sensor. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845860-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+28.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 28" /></p> <p>A simple neck joint allows the VF-2SS to rotate its head turret a full 360 degrees, as well as look up and down a tiny bit. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845862-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+30.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 30" /></p> <p>The arms are fully poseable with ratcheting joints in both their shoulders and elbows. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845863-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+31.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 31" /></p> <p>Normally, the elbows can only bend about 90 degrees. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845864-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+32.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 32" /></p> <p>However, an extra hinge hidden in the contours of the bicep greatly adds to each arm's range of motion. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845865-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+33.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 33" /></p> <p>Now, you can curl the arms up all the way. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845867-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+35.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 35" /></p> <p>All of this lets the Valkyrie II get a good two-handed grip on its gun pod. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845879-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+39.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 39" /></p> <p>The weapon itself is not amazingly detailed or anything, but looks the part well enough. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845876-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+36.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 36" /></p> <p>It features a hinged hand guard, as well as an extending front portion that echoes the VF-1's gun pod design. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845866-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+34.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 34" /></p> <p>Below the waist, the VF-2SS suffers from a common problem with VF-1-esque toys, in that its legs are limited by their closeness to the back plate and wings. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/846313-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+43.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 43" /></p> <p>Spreading the wings and/or unlocking the swing bars helps a little bit, but the toy's articulation is still far too limited for anything truly dynamic. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/846312-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+42.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 42" /></p> <p>Frankly, the toy looks more awkward than cool in anything other than a standing pose. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845878-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+38.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 38" /></p> <p>Even a stand doesn't seem to help. </p> <p><img src="/gallery2/d/845877-3/evolution+toy+vf-2ss+valkyrie+37.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=4202e99360d20c8640b13576f562a245" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="evolution toy vf-2ss valkyrie 37" /></p> <p>To paraphrase Macross II's unforgettable Dennis Lone, Evolution Toy doesn't know the first thing about Valkyrie design. Well, that is a bit of an exaggeration, but the final product is just not up to par with the current crop of Macross toys. The toy's rather "old school" engineering does not impart it with a sense of Takatoku-like durability, but an inescapable feeling of obsolescence. This is the Valkyrie II toy that could have easily been made when the series was new, but lacks the qualities of a solid collector oriented toy. For its price of roughly $220 USD, Evolution Toy's VF-2SS is not the kind of throwback I see buyers welcoming with open arms. However, it is, as of this review, the only Valkyrie II toy to exist. And it will soon be joined by both a yellow-striped Fairy Squadron variant and Nexx Gilbert's blue-trimmed machine, both of which will come with the Valkyrie's huge Super Armed Pack equipment. While I cannot recommend this toy at its asking price, it does make for an okay display piece in Battroid mode, so it might be worth it to diehard fans of the Valkyrie II who want a large 1/60 scale representation of the VF-2SS on their shelves. Even so, I would wait for a hefty discount before looking into one of these toys. </p> <p>And before I close out this review, I want to share some information that may shed some light as to why it has taken such a long time for the Valkyrie to receive a toy. Contrary to belief, there was no grand conspiracy preventing the production of a VF-2SS, just the results of the Macross license's limited Japan market. I spoke with the number one English-speaking Macross II fan, Adrian (aka Save) of Macrossworld and the <a href="http://www.macrossworld.com/category/speakerpodcast/">Macross Speaker Podcast</a>, about the lack of a VF-2SS toy until recently. Much like famous war reporter, Dennis Lone, he went straight to the source and asked his contact at Yamato (this was before they became Arcadia):</p> <blockquote><p>"I also knew the same contact over at Yamato Toys that Graham knew. He was part of the family that owned the company and he pretty much oversaw the running of the company. He introduced me to the team of employees that worked on the Macross product line. As I got to know them, I would ask about any possible Macross II products, mainly a VF-2SS. At first they would just default to, "there are no collectors (in Japan) that would be interested in buying it". After a while two members of the team both said "since they have a relationship Kawamori, and it's not his design, they didn't think it would be wise to ,pursue a Macross II license". This was around the time of the 1/60 scale Valk release. Either way, even I would side with them that in Japan there was no market for the VF-2SS prior to Frontier, even if they did get a license. </p> <p>Fast forward to preset day and I still joke with Mr. K about a VF-2SS and usually he just laughs. </p> <p>I was also told that Evolution Toy tried to get the Macross II license a year before they first showed off the VF-2SS at Miyazawa Mokei spring 2015. Their original plan was to have it released around or just after the release of the Macross II Blu-Ray, but BW stalled on granting them the license."</p></blockquote> <p>If things were different for Macross, there might have been a VF-2SS toy sooner. The reality of the situation is that the demand for Macross II products within Japan has been very small for a long time and it wasn't until Frontier came along that the series as a whole benefited from its newest entry's huge success. Could there be more Macross II Valkyrie toys in the future? Well, Bandai did display a prototype of a Hi-Metal R VF-2SS at one of their trade shows, but as of this review there has been no further info about it (or even up close photos).
